5 Skills That Come Before The First Word From Toddlers

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

Toddlers are in a critical stage of development as they are learning and mastering new skills every day. Here are five skills that typically come before a toddler's first word:

  1. Social skills: Toddlers learn to make eye contact, respond to their name, and engage in back-and-forth interactions with others long before they can say their first word.

  2. Fine motor skills: Toddlers develop their fine motor skills by grasping objects, reaching for toys, and manipulating small objects, such as blocks or beads, long before they can say their first word.

  3. Gross motor skills: Toddlers develop their gross motor skills by crawling, cruising, and eventually walking long before they can say their first word.

  4. Understanding of language: Toddlers begin to understand language long before they can say their first word. They can respond to simple commands, such as "Come here" or "Give me that," by following the instructions.

  5. Emotion regulation: Toddlers begin to learn how to regulate their emotions and respond appropriately to different situations long before they can say their first word. They can show their emotions through facial expressions and body language.

It's important to note that every child develops differently, and these skills may not be developed in the same order, and in some cases, some skills may not be developed at all. However, these skills are important for the child's overall development and communication with others.
